Railway photos by Stephen Rees
Welcome
Locomotive shots are being reorganised from the general to more specific galleries listed by railway. Where there are multiple subjects they will stay by collection. File names are generally descriptive, and will be sorted by loco number in most cases. All these pictures were originally posted on alt.binaries.pictures.rail. If you use them or link to them, you must credit the photographer.

    Dates and photographers unknown

These pictures were rescued by Colin Fairman who went to
East Ham Grammar School just as I did some years later.
He sent these to the EHGS mailing list, and they are reposted here
with his permission. However, the original photographer is not
known. The images labelled GLC came from a retirement album
put together for an employee of Beckton Gas Works - at one
time the largest of its kind in the world. It was operated by the
Gas Light and Coke Company (hence GLC) later nationalised
as North Thames Gas Board. The album was saved from destruction
during a house clearance. The others were found on a skip, with
even less information. They may also be from Beckton, or could
be from any one of a number of industrial railways that operated
on many sites along the Thames estuary.

The following descriptions were hand written in the album

"Beckton possesses 36 locos of which there are nearly always two
in the mechanical shops for periodical complete overhaul"

The loco with the unreadable plate is described as
    "The Largest of Our Locos"

    No 6 has this description
"One of our Peckett's Goods Locos"
"There are two other locos similar to this one which [are] used for
handling mainline traffic. They are exceptionally powerful and efficient
    locos"

    No 17
"One of the smallest of our locos - a "jumbo" engine"
"These locos, of which there are three, were designed for use in the
coke holds underneath the stages of the retort houses before
ash ships and hoppers were brought into use"

I am hoping someone here can throw some more light on the
    identity of these locos
